Social egg freezing (oocyte freezing for non-medical reasons) in Denmark

Debate is on-going at present in the Danish media as to growing demand for social egg freezing, implications and possible concerns as illustrated by an article (in Danish): https://lnkd.in/eJzDsXJQ – we have made a summary in English below as well as more comments following as to the status of social freezing seen in a more international context.

Main findings from the article:
• Rising demand – fertility clinics are experiencing a noticeable increase in women seeking social egg freezing.
• Motivation – women choose the treatment primarily because:
– they have not found the right partner
– they want to keep the option of having children later
• Typical age group – many women seeking treatment are in their 30s, where fertility is already declining.
• Medical reality.

Experts emphasize:
– fertility declines with age.
– freezing eggs earlier improves chances.
– the treatment does not guarantee a future child.

Emotional/psychological aspect:
Social freezing provides reassurance and a sense of control, but also raises concerns about giving women a false sense of security.

Overall the trend reflects a broader societal shift:
– later family formation.
– mismatch between biological and social timelines.

The article captures:
– a clear behavioral trend.
– the data suggests it is still small but fast-growing.
– the biggest unanswered question is not demand but real utilization and outcomes.

Market size perspective (not based on the referenced article)
When assessing the share of social freezing within total ART treatments in Denmark, precise national data remains limited despite otherwise strong reporting standards. However, available indicators suggest that social freezing likely accounts for a low single-digit percentage of total cycles. While demand is increasing, both the absolute volumes and relative share remain modest.

For benchmarking:
– UK provides one of the most reliable datasets: 6,932 egg-freezing cycles in 2023, representing approximately 7% of total treatment and storage cycles.
– Spain, as a leading European fertility market, shows a slightly lower but still meaningful level estimated at around ~5% of ART cycles.

Interpretation:
Although social freezing is experiencing strong growth across markets, it remains a niche segment, and Denmark likely below other markets like the UK in terms of relative share.
